Have the actual information ready
- The laboratory report: parameter, result, units, sample date and sample location.
- The system type, building/district and contact responsible for the site.
- Any EMSD notice, its directions and deadline.
- Recent service records, changes in operation and actions already taken.
Different tests and systems require different responses. A high reading alone does not identify the cause. Follow the applicable notice and site procedure, and obtain competent advice for any operational change.

The scope, timetable and price must be confirmed for the actual incident. A visit or test does not by itself certify that a statutory notice has been satisfied.
Cooling-tower reference
EMSD states that when its fresh-water cooling-tower samples reach the upper total Legionella threshold of 1,000 cfu/mL, it issues a nuisance notice requiring emergency decontamination and water re-testing within the prescribed period. Read the actual notice and the applicable Code of Practice.
